A feature on 1up.com attempts to take on the question, "Why are gamers still playing Pokémon?"
While Platinum may be a new game to some, and a somewhat upgraded second run for others, it is, essentially, the 10th run through the same game for many. But that’s not enough to keep Platinum off the top sales charts around the world.
For answers, Editor Justin Haywald cites interviews with Designer and Game Freak Board Director Junichi Masuda and Platinum’s Director Takeshi Kawachimaru.
But Haywald gives a large part of the credit to Nintendo itself for simply knowing how to keep a winning formula going. "No matter how many sports cameos Mario makes for RPG outings, the Italian plumber is all about platforming, saving the princess, and beating Bowser. Link is a sword-wielding Hyrulian who has to rescue Zelda. And Pokémon is a collecting, battling, and trading-centric RPG."

You showed my favorite all-time character from Pokemon… Thank you!!
I really don’t know why I’m still playing, but it won’t stop me from playing it still!
Hello, I’m TheGlitchmaster, and I still play R/B.
Thank you.
They made good points about the Mario & Zelda things, and comparing them to the “nonsense” about Pokemon’s sales.
Been a fan since the very day R/B came out, and to this day it’s still one of my favorite games of all time. I always find myself pulling out my first bought Gameboy to play R/B, just to feel the nostalgia from when I was little. =]
hmm… didn’t know that joec was in R/B. Those games are the best. I still play them
Awesome, old man.
I remember when I first played Red version… It always feels so nostalgic starting out fresh in a Pokémon game.
i was playing red before i could read, honestly.
my favorite part is restarting the game… to begin anew…
OMG… I WAS JUST PLAYING BLUE… FREAKY!
The formula for pokemon is what keeps bringing people back to it. (the old man is the best.)
Darn it, thethunderbringer beat me to the punch lol
I know that I continue to play after all of these years because, for one thing, the games are lots of fun. I enjoy breeding and EV training. I also play ’cause it takes my mind off of real life problems… I hope I stick with Pokémon for years to come, I don’t feel like I ever want to let it go. Through it, I’ve met so many people; some of them have even become the best friends I’ve seen through my eyes.
Such a positive impact…
I’ve been a fan since way back when. My first pokemon game was Ruby, but I actually went back in the pokemon series to G/S!
most other games have a set story line anda ending. pokemon you can do anything in and not have an ending. so much freedom
Pokemon isn’t going anywhere, and I’m glad that it’s beaten the test of time.
I’m playing Silver right now, does that count? Anyway, I still play my Blue version with my cousin.
Hey look, it’s JoeC.
i never get to play any before the gba era, and i just started my pokemon madness when d/p came out
