How to Challenge Gym Leaders

I did a search for a similiar topic and read stickies I thought may have the answer in it. How do you challenge a gym leader? Do you just wait around until one comes online, start a thread asking for a battle from one of them, or a certain one, go to the chatroom, or what?

Right now, I believe the gyms are closed for revamping.
When they come back, the leaders will have a thread in their gym room (found in The Tribune Gym League) for people to make their challenges. Keep an eye out in the thread to see if you're selected. Then you and the leader will work together to find a time to fight.
If you win, you get their badge. If you lose, you have to wait a week before you can challenge again.

Tells me that I should always have a team on hand...which I don't atm really, cause I'm picky, and instead just have boxes of EVed pokemon.
